Oregano
{Origanum Vulgare}
{Origanum Vulgare}
Flavour & Cuisine
As a classic herb for pizza oregano is closely related to Italian cuisine in general and every variety of tomato dishes in particular. It is also en essential ingredient for Greek souvlaki which would be unimaginable without it.
Its flavour is evocative of marjoram and thyme, but is more intense and “earthy”. Because of this, it is a perfect match for olive oil on Greek feta cheese.
Origin & History
Oregano is also called „wild marjoram“ or „dost”. Its diverse names indicate that it can be found in various regions of Europe. But compared to Central Europe oregano develops a stronger flavour under the southern sun.
It prefers mountainsides and edges of forests to grow; its name is derived from Greek and translates as “delight of the mountain“.
